An old picture of Puffing Billy going through a crossing with an old-style crossbuck at Upper Ferntree Gully back in the very early days of the tourist railway in which they ran on the line between Upper Ferntree Gully and Belgrave. This section has since been converted to board gauge and electrified.

A picture of a blue 'Harris' train about to go through the old Glenhuntly Road tramsquare crossing in Elsternwick. This crossing was grade separated in 1960 and is obviously long gone.

Old picture of the Riversdale Road tramsquare crossing (This must of been the first tramsquare crossing in Melbourne to have boom barriers and is also the only crossing in Melbourne AFAIK to have quad gates).

Nice picture shot in 1989 showing off one of the many handgate crossings that used to exist on the Upfield line (they were still in service until 1998!) Also shows off the last Hitachi set (65M-965T-88M) to still be in the original plain sliver condition and not have MET/PTC stickers! This same 3-car set was also one of the last Hitachi sets to still be in revenue service (Though with 1982T instead of 965T/1965T, which was moved to a different set and later cut up for scarp in 2005). It was withdrawn along with another 3-car following a derailment in January 2013.

I believe the Australian Standards for crossings have been updated and those red cross-bucks are meant to be used because they are more visible to road users.

I've posted this in the Google Maps Scavenger Hunt thread already, but I thought I'll reshare this find. For some reason, the crossing at Poath Road in Hughesdale had the lantern lights on top of the gate rather than below the gate like most other crossings with A-gates in Australia.

Sometime between 2012 & 2013, the lights were moved to the typical below the gate position.

Look how weird this crossing barrier looks at this South Australia crossing! GSV also managed to get the crossing active too! (Not to mention, they totally ignored the fact that the signals were active and a train was coming)
