This is the crossing at Nubba, New South Wales, Australia. The signals here were installed in 1975.

The lights at the crossing were made by Westinghouse and the gate mechs are WRRS/GRS type D. There is a WCH mechanical bell on the northern side of the crossing, while the southern side has a very rare Federal Signal bell (in Australia they are as rare as teardrop bells).

This crossing is one of the last in NSW to still have wishbone gates and one even has the old black & white stripes. The crossing sees very few cars which is probably why the gates have lasted for so long.

I've encountered a few black and white gates during the Farewell Hitachi Train tour back in April 2014. They were along the South Morang line at around Northcote and Thornbury. I remember getting pretty shocked seeing them and now that I think of it, pretty neat considering the fact that we were on a 1970's EMU with no air-conditioning and opening windows. All it needed were Teardrop bells and chevron shaped reflectors on the gates and it would feel like a time machine!

I've encountered a few black and white gates during the Farewell Hitachi Train tour back in April 2014. They were along the South Morang line at around Northcote and Thornbury. I remember getting pretty shocked seeing them and now that I think of it, pretty neat considering the fact that we were on a 1970's EMU with no air-conditioning and opening windows. All it needed were Teardrop bells and chevron shaped reflectors on the gates and it would feel like a time machine!

Nice to know there are still a few black & white gates left, sadly most of them are probably on borrowed time, either the careless driver will hit them or they will be replaced anyway.

At least one of the B&W gates I saw on that day have been replaced now.

Still, I'm amazed they've managed to last that long considering the fact that they receive more traffic than the Nubba crossing. The crossing near Seaholme station still has them though...

I wonder if they buy their red and white gates from WCH, since they still sell wishbone/wooden gates.

I'm not too sure where they get them from. I don't think red & white gates started appearing in Australia until the 1990's...

Bad news. Another one of the black and white gates in Northcote have been replaced. This one's at Beavers Rd...
