For some reason, some of the hybrid bells are painted completely black. I don't know why though.

I might of posted this before, but I found out that this crossing on the Upfield line had a newer 'flat' gate for some reason. Usually they use A-frame gates for suburban crossings in Melbourne, but they didn't at this crossing for some reason...

Some interesting odds and ends in Melbourne.

The Heatherton Road level crossing in Noble Park is located next to a roundabout. They have these interesting wig-wag traffic signals that are active when a train is approaching.

As you can see, the crossing is active in this shot and a train is crossing. For some reason, they turn off when the gates have lowered (based of a visit of this crossing and Noble Park station.

Another odd thing about this crossing is that they have a cantilever signal behind a mast signal. There's a few crossings like this in Melbourne...

A few crossings are located next to traffic intersections, thus on some occasions, crossing signals can act as both a traffic & crossing signal! Here's an example in Clayton.

Aside from being one of the four locations were trams crossed at-grade with train tracks, the former Burke Road level crossing in Glen Iris also had these mini gates for the trams. They used the same Westinghouse gate mechanisms used for pedestrian crossings. The actual gate had a reflector on it as well as a lantern light (the same used on most level crossing boom gates in Melbourne.)

As I've pointed out many times before, the rest of the tram crossings in Melbourne have hinged gates that keep clear of overhead tram wires.

  • Poath Road, Hughesdale
  • Murrumbeena Road, Murrumbeena
  • Koornang Road, Carnegie (If I can get more pictures of it soon)
I was unable to get good pictures of the Heatherton Road level crossing due to the sheer amount of traffic on the day. (I'll have to revisit it later), and Clayton was a construction zone thanks to the crossing removal works (I'll get it when the traffic volume is low and there's trains running.)
Expect several more from me in the coming updates. Some crossings I'm eyeing are...
  • Glenferrie Road, Kooyong (hopefully the hybrid bells are still there!)
  • High Street, Glen Iris
  • Union Road, Surrey Hills
  • Blackburn Road, Blackburn (Better be quick with this one as it will be gone by the start of next year)
  • High Street, Reservoir (The most insane crossing ever!)
North Road, Ormond would of been nice to add to the site, but it's already been removed. :OhWell:

This passive crossing in Beelbangera, New South Wales still had an old-style advance warning sign in 2010. Wonder if it's still there?:

I forgot about this one on Maidstone St, Altona. I can confirm it's still there! Shame it looks so tired though:

Strangely, a modern sign has also been installed further down the road:

It's interesting to note that this crossing still has Westinghouse Hybrid Bells and Westinghouse Pedestrian Gate Mechs. This means that (apart from the LED light upgrade of the early 2000's and the replacement of the black and white gates around 2007) the equipment at this crossing is all original from when the line first opened in 1985!:
