There aren't any of those around here that I know of. This is solely BNSF/UP territory.

I can't for the life of me figure out why those didn't catch on. They're much more pleasing to the ear than a WCH E-bell and far more distinct than a GS e-bell (I hate those damn things).

In fact, they sound a lot like these Dutch crossing bells.
You think your car gets bad mileage? SP 4449 consumes 10 gallons of bunker oil and 100 gallons of water every mile.

the type one on that cantilever looks like the top is only being held up by one support... the extra crossbucks on the gate masts look hideous.

The second support is there, although tough to see. CN does that "second crossbuck on the gate mast" thing all the time. One of the reasons I generally don't care for their crossing setups.

I do like the sound of the Safetran Type 1 e-bell, but I don't like its housing.

I have no guess as to why the Type 1's chip was discontinued, but I have a suspicion as to why the Type 1's housing was discontinued.

Click here and watch what the bell does at 0:20.

My guess is that the housing was too delicate to withstand being jerked around like the one in the above video.
