It is probably the same reason that Canadian crossbucks made it to the United States a couple times, a railroad would probably mix them up not knowing the difference. Although you would think that someone would notice.
Again, some of them may have been made that way per the railroad's decision before they were standardized in the MUTCD.
I'm talking more about the modern ones in New York and in Maine.

Nice find! I made some posts of some crossing in Sarnia yesterday. I wonder if those gates next to the crossing are for the crossing, they both use railroad crossing gate equipment but only one of them has an actual railroad crossing gate. It would be pretty odd to have one gate for each crossing like that though.
