The reason why that program isn't for me is because the removable hard drive itself doesn't work, I can't put new files on it.
What are the symptoms of it? Are you able to see the drive in Disk Management and maybe it's missing a drive letter assignment? Is it just giving a slow, constant click?
It doesn't register on my computer and it makes a clicking sound once plugged in.

If all else fails, I would see if you can find a local computer repair shop to take it to... or there's the geek squad at Best Buy. Staples and Office Depot also usually offer repair services (for a fee of course). But $1700 is WAY to much for anything like that.
