Re: Google Maps Scavenger Hunt
Don't think I've ever seen level crossing signals without the red-and-white striped outlines and missing visors. Good catch!

Re: Google Maps Scavenger Hunt
British signals use to have white outlines instead of the red and white outlines, there is a handful still in service. Irish signals (except in Dublin) still use the white outline.ZachL wrote:Don't think I've ever seen level crossing signals without the red-and-white striped outlines and missing visors. Good catch!

For crossings suggesting that they are dangerous, the track conditions can really show how often they may be used.ToledoRailfan wrote:Interesting signs!

Re: Google Maps Scavenger Hunt
Already known about:
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=3405#p23448
Signals likely used to have wooden gates originally. Railroads would do things like that to avoid having the lights get hit by the gates.
The signs are old cast iron ones, so the line may have originally been a very busy main line. Or there used to be some other condition at the crossings years ago that made them dangerous, and the signs were never removed.ZachL wrote:For crossings suggesting that they are dangerous, the track conditions can really show how often they may be used.ToledoRailfan wrote:Interesting signs!
