Female Pedestrian Signals in Melbourne

Don't really know what to say about this, thought it was a hoax but it comes from credible news site. Surely there are better things to spend money on?

Seriously, does it really matter on what gender the person is on Pedestrian Signals?

I doubt that many people would even notice or care what gender the pedestrian signals are, they are simply a pair of red and green lights

Since I have a feeling politics will inevitably come up in this thread, I will lay out a warning right now:
Should anyone actively attack another user over their political beliefs, this thread will be locked and the user will be warned. Second offence (in another thread, of course) may result in a ban.
However, should we all keep our heads level, I will personally allow this thread to continue, though I am not responsible for the decisions of any other admins.

Back on topic, I can honestly say that as a person who (by the American political definition) leans liberal, I think it's a nice gesture but don't really care in the long run, and in the end, will probably be like the same-sex couples being featured on those German pedestrian signals. And depending on the LEDs they use, it may just be a matter of swapping out the masks, which likely don't cost much themselves, and upgrading any remaining incandescent pedestrian signals to LED.

Besides, in the long run, Melbourne's government could be spending the money on much more useless things, such as banana slicers (yes, they exist) for every single one of their residents. (BTW, I recommend reading the reviews for the banana slicers I linked should y'all have some time to waste.)

Had a good laugh reading some of the banana slicer reviews, will have to go back and read some more another time!

I certainly hope that politics does not come into this thread, as that was not intended when I posted the article. I consider myself to be an open minded person who is tolerant and respectful of others. Apart from having an interest in traffic lights, the main reason I posted the news article is because I found it interesting that somebody actually thought of having female pedestrian signals.

I do think that it's a waste of money, most people probably wouldn't even notice, and many people don't obey the pedestrian signals anyway! But it certainly makes you wonder what other kinds of pedestrian signals would be possible.....

Many countries have been using only symbols on their pedestrian signals longer than the US has, which adopted the hand/man indications as the official ones back in 2003. I believe Australia has been using symbolic indications on their pedestrian signals since the 80s.

I'm an Ultra Right-Winged Christian Conservative Republican myself. I believe the signals themselves are a waste of money but whatever tickles their fancy I guess. They could put male signals on one side and female signals on the other. That would work out well.

I'm drifting a bit of topic but how are you suppose to know that it is safe to cross without having a dedicated signal? Traffic signals are designed just for motorists.
