Nice to see the teardrop bell still at Hamilton, I think that means there is a good chance of the other teardrop bells on the line still being there too. I actually think it's a positive thing that the lights were upgraded to LED, it probably means they are happy leave the bell and the rest of the crossing alone.

I visited Adelaide in 2013 and was shocked by the amount of e-bells over there, they were pretty much all Safetran type 3 and it got boring real fast! There were only a handful of m-bells and they are probably gone by now, looking at streetview it seems that all of SA is now Safetran type 3 e-bells.
Not to mention, the Melbourne to Adelaide line is full of e-bells now! :aaargh:

Within a few years, the whole of Melbourne will be filled with crappy General Signals e-Bells!
With they way Metro are going it's more likely to be a few months :Curse1:

The other side also had a Teardrop bell!

Sadly, this crossing was upgraded with the same boring equipment as elsewhere. :Awww:

They also caught the new crossing active.

That teardrop bell was cast iron. Notice how quickly the red background on the new crossbuck has faded!
TrickyMario7654 wrote:The Nunn Street crossing in Benalla probably isn't safe either. I bet they have some 'upgrade' planned for it too.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-36.545 ... 312!8i6656
Hopefully they are too busy upgrading the gate-less crossings to do anything to Nunn St. ARTC probably won't be in a hurry to upgrade it unless the VIC government throws in some money.

TrickyMario7654 wrote:Out of all seriousness, I think we should start a group dedicated to saving the remaining hybrid bells in use in Melbourne.
Sure why not, time to tackle the metro menace
TrickyMario7654 wrote:This is an odd looking 'Crossing Ahead' sign. At first glance, nothing seems off about it. But if you look carefully, it's actually light green!
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.730 ... 312!8i6656

That's not the only odd thing in this area. There's also an old 'Commonwealth Bicentennial Road Project' sign near the crossing! I wonder what the project was about and why the sign is still standing after nearly 30 years?
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.730 ... 312!8i6656
Lots of those light green signs have been popping up in NSW too. There are a few in my area and after about 6 months the green has began to fade and they look more like the normal yellow signs. Not sure if that is meant to happen.

Nice find with the Bicentennial sign, I wonder if it means they will take 200 years to finish the project :LOL4:

Nice to see those Lex-c lights still holding on. Not sure if there is anyone from SA on the forum who could get some photos. I notice that the signal bases have the newer GRS logo, so it's probably safe to assume that the gate mechs are GRS too.

Found a couple of pedestrian crossings at Tamworth NSW with GRS semaphore gate mechs and Klaxon alarms.

The first one at Fitzroy St is interesting because it has track count signs (2 Tracks in this case) which are normally used on road crossings. The second track is a disconnected siding and it's amazing that it hasn't been torn up. The gates also look like short sections of road crossing gates! https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-31.090 ... 312!8i6656

The second crossing at Hill St, it has different striping on the gates https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-31.093 ... 312!8i6656

Sadly this line no longer sees any freight apart from very occasional maintenance trains. Normally these crossings only see two passenger trains per day (one in either direction) and the odd heritage train every few months. It's probably the only reason these GRS mechs have survived, as the line probably doesn't see enough trains to justify upgrading the crossings. There are also numerous road crossings in the area with lights only and WCH m-bells.

Doesn't anyone know who makes Metro's A-framed gates? I can only find the flat American type for sale in Australia.
Metro, why are you so bad at maintaining your railway crossings??

Some interesting upgrades done to all the level crossings beyond Keon Park station as part of the South Morang rail extension project, which saw the track on this section of the line duplicated.

The first crossing is Settlement Road in Thomastown.

Before: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.687 ... 312!8i6656
After: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.687 ... 312!8i6656

As you can tell, the old gate mechs and the hybrid bells were replaced.

Oddly, the old cantilever was retained (all the other cantilevers on this section of the line were replaced as part of the project).
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.687 ... 312!8i6656

The old traffic signals and the masts were replaced too.
Before: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.687 ... 312!8i6656
After: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.687 ... 312!8i6656

The crossbuck and SORS were also moved from the cantilever to the mast signal.
Before: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.687 ... 312!8i6656
After: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.687 ... 312!8i6656

Next crossing is Station Street, Thomastown
Before: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.682 ... 312!8i6656
After: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.682 ... 312!8i6656

As you can tell, the cantilevers have been replaced and they also now have an extra pair of lights facing towards adjacent roads.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.682 ... 312!8i6656

One of the old cantilevers was pretty rusty (much like at Murrumbeena).
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.682 ... 312!8i6656

The hybrid bells on the old crossing also were mounted on Teardrop mounting posts.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.682 ... 312!8i6656

The gate masts on the newer crossing are also relatively small.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.682 ... 312!8i6656

Our third crossing is called Manns Crossing, in Lalor.
Before: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.672 ... 312!8i6656
After (it's active in this shot): https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.672 ... 312!8i6656

The old crossing had a Teardrop and a Safetran bell mounted on a Teardrop post.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.672 ... 312!8i6656
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.672 ... 312!8i6656

It also had old gate mechs.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.672 ... 312!8i6656
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.672 ... 312!8i6656

Our fourth crossing is Paschke Crescent, Lalor (street view incorrectly calls it Station Street).
Before: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.666 ... 328!8i1664
After: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.666 ... 312!8i6656

The old crossing had a Safetran bell mounted on a Teardrop post and a bell which I can't tell who made it due to the grainy image.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.666 ... 328!8i1664
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.666 ... 328!8i1664

An old cantilever (which has the '2 Tracks' sign mounted below the lights.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.666 ... 328!8i1664

The new crossing active.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.666 ... 312!8i6656

As you can tell, there was already a second track going through this crossing, so it was completely pointless replacing the signals here.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.666 ... 328!8i1664

The last crossing is Childs Road, Epping.
Before: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.659 ... 312!8i6656
After: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.659 ... 312!8i6656

The old crossing had quite possibly the only WCH or WRRS bell I've seen on the suburban rail network.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.659 ... 312!8i6656

The pedestrian boom barriers on one side had different coloured gates.

Pretty sure the bell is a WCH, as the bell door has the bolt style locking mechanism that WCH uses. WRRS bells have the hasp locking mechanism.

Sad to see lots of nice old equipment gone, including quite a few Westinghouse pedestrian gates. But it is nice to see them spending money and upgrading the line.

Found a few interesting crossings between Cragieburn and Seymour.

The first crossing is located on Summerhill Road, outside of Craigeburn. It has EB gate mechs, wishbone gates (though I'm willing to bet that they've been removed now), and hybrid bells.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.571 ... 312!8i6656

Next up, is this gateless crossing at Beveridge, with has a hybrid bell. However, it's slated to be upgraded with gates.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.471 ... 312!8i6656

This one on Epping-Kilmore Road has a Westinghouse EB gate mech and a Safetran one. It also hybrid bells and an odd lights configuration on one side.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.394 ... 312!8i6656
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.395 ... 312!8i6656

This crossing has four tracks and a signal which lacks a crossbuck!
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.129 ... 312!8i6656

Another crossing with four tracks, with a tall mast signal.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.113 ... 312!8i6656

This crossing also has hazard triangles on the 'Crossing Ahead' signs!
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.114 ... 312!8i6656

I found a crossing with uses crossbucks with the red backgrounds as an advance warning sign on either side, even though the proper ones are used further down the road.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.056 ... 312!8i6656
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.113 ... 312!8i6656

Thankfully, it seems that V/line doesn't own the crossings along this section of the line. As this recent upgrade has used Siemens gate mechs rather than WCH ones like V/line using on their new installs.

It's a nice crossing and there wouldn't be many gateless crossings with 3 tracks, but yeah it's probably gone by now.

Interesting find there. I think those crossbucks with the red backgrounds actually look better as advance warning signs as opposed to when they are on a crossing!

It raises an interesting question as to who owns the crossing. ARTC would own the standard gauge track and I'm guessing that V/Line would own the broad gauge tracks. I wonder who gets called out to fix a fault?

Since last year ARTC have been using WCH gate mechs and e-bells on their crossing upgrades, but were using Siemens prior to that.
