Hey Josh, you aren't by any chance a member of the Stormtrack forum at http://www.stormtrack.org/forum, are you? You seem pretty knowledgeable about severe weather, I don't run into too many people away from that forum that throw around terms like "surface-based CAPE". I like to check up on that site as well as the various NOAA sites when a severe weather event is ongoing, such as today.
Your story sounds somewhat similar to what happened to me on August 18, 2005. An F3 tornado passed through our neighborhood, killing one person less than 1/4 mile north of us. The manner of death was also a brick chimney collapse.
