Which in this case appears to be the traffic light cantilever. The cop was able to jostle it loose.
Actually, the traffic light cantilever is quite a distance away from the crossing signal.

I guess the Westinghouse gate mechanism was malfunctioning.

Another common cause of railroad crossing malfunctions (at least in Melbourne) is power failures or track equipment faults, as was the case with most of the crossings in my area today. The gates were stuck down on McGregor Road, Main Street, and possibly (though I'm not 100% sure) Racecourse Road.

Saw one at Cardinia Road today. After a city bound train went through the crossing and the gates rose, the gate on the side we drove on slipped after raising, causing the crossing lights to start flashing for a split second. It got stuck in a lowering/raising potion as a result.

Tracy Road, Hilliard FL.

One of the gates failed to lock into the wind guard, causing the gate mechanism to make a vibrating sound.

I don't think that's the cause. Normally a hold clear issue would cause that malfunction (known as "pumping", IIRC), but the US&S Model 75 (shown there) doesn't have that, IIRC. Basically, the gate mechs were just messing up (also the WCH mechanical bell there is now dead, sadly).
They/Them for me, please.

I know that, when the crossing activated. You can hear some life out of the bells motor until it stops. Some guy in the comments told me its a WRRS mechanical bell, not a WCH one. But it is a WCH one.

Here is another case of gate mechanism errors.

This crossing in Plainfield Illinois, had a problem with the gate not catching the wind guard and constantly lowering. The gate mechanisms are US&S Model 95's which in my case are the worst gate mechanisms ever made.
