Railfanning trip

Can't have signals without railroads, so talk about your favorite locomotives, railroads and any other (non signal) railroad related stuff.

Railfanning trip

Post by illinoistrains »

tomorrow i am heading to northern AZ to the BNSF transcon :Tongue2: . I am leaving at about 5:15 am. and will be back monday afternoon. i will take I-17 to Flagstaff and see some trains and explore the area, then i will head east on I-40 and make stops along the way to see trains, ending up in Winslow, sometime early afternoon. I have reservations at the La Posada hotel ( a former ATSF Harvey House), i will stay there untill about noon and watch trains then head back to Phoenix and develop and get my photos on a CD so i can share them. Everybody wish me luck!

well, my mom i got back around 2 this afternoon. i think i must have seen over 50 trains! the first one i saw was in Flagstaff around 7:45am, it had a GP39-2 in the consist, that was the only standard cab i saw on a train all trip. i saw a few more and the next cool one i saw has 3 BNSF units, 2 CSX units, and 2 Norfork Southern units. The next train of interest had a ATSF warbonnet and a gray KCS unit. After lunch and a few more trains we headed east to Cosnino, we got set up and after a while an Eastbound came through and right as it ended a west bound went past, followed by another eastbound. About 3 we got to La Posida and settled down and went out to explore the trains in winslow, i found the yard and there was 1 train and some other locomotives parked nearby, and i got to see my first SD40-2! back at La Posida about 4 trains came through before the Amtrak came, i called it a night. When i woke up a went to 3rd st. bridge and got an amazing shot of a westbound then an Eastbound. After a few more at La Posida (including two SD40-2's switching in the yard and about) we packed up and went to Cosnino and saw two more, including a very short WB stack/TOFC train, Then Flagstaff and saw 1 more before calling it a day. Tomorrow i will have photos to show everybody.

The best thing i saw all trip, my favorite consist, was a WB stack train in Flagstaff on Sun. with 3 BRAND NEW GEVO's! they were all facing forward, and didnt have a speck of dirt on them, and numbered in this order: 7298, 7299, and 7300! it also has a Warbonnet dash-9 numbered 602.

Any Thunderstorms get in your way? We had some at about 5:30 PM Today. It dumped about 0.25" of rain pretty fast.
