CN locomotive, but owned by IC?

While typing up the locomotive numbers on this video i made, i noticed when i typed one of the numbers in, it was a IC locomotive, but with the CN paint scheme. RRPictureArchives classifies it a IC locomotive, but there is no IC paint!

Can somebody explain?

Illinois Central is a subsidiary of Canadian National and it is considered a paper company (company only on paper), just like the Grand Truck Western and the Wisconsin Central, and the SOO Line with Canadian Pacific.

The CN and IC merged years ago (which is why CN has lines all the way down to Louisiana and Mobile, AL), but it appears that CN likes to use the IC and GTW reporting marks to add extra roster space to their railroad.

I think that might have something to do with CN wanting to identify the locomotives used by their individual subsidiaries.

Probably, but I do know that UP uses UPY reporting marks on some of their engines (especially smaller ones used on locals and in yards).

The BNSF does the same thing, however I have only seen them use the old GN reporting mark for old engines that are usually stored or off the roster.

I've also seen a few BNSF engines with a "BN" logo on the side (as in a partial BNSF swoosh with only the first two letters).

Some of the CN rail lines that I have taken, they all say "Illinois Central" on the relay cases, and in fact, one of the crossings I filmed also had 2 Illinois Central locomotives as well shown below:
