Lake Street #2, Dothan, AL
*originally recorded on 7-22-19*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of WCH 8 inch lights and a (dying?) Federal Signal mechanical bell.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of WRRS 8 inch lights and a dead Safetran Type 2 electronic bell.
After seeing the signal maintainer test the crossing in Snowdoun, and finishing documenting the rest of the crossings up to Montgomery, I figured that A724 would probably be leaving Thomasville, GA, by about the time I got to Cairo, GA. As such, I hopped on the road, drove down to Cairo (stopping along the way to document a crossing near Brundidge I had missed back in 2018), and found out the train had rolled through a few hours earlier. As such, I went back on the road towards Dothan, and was able to catch-up with the end A724 in Cowarts, and beat him over to this crossing in Dothan, AL, where we see he has a pair of YN3 AC44CWs for power.
This crossing is another nice one, like many of the ones along this line. The signals are a pair of older SCL signals (probably from the late 60s/early 70s) that have had a few changes made to them over the years, though I ain't entirely sure on the timeline (though I do believe the WRRS lights here are original, along with possibly the Federal Signal bell).
The Safetran Type 2 e-bell here is quite obviously dead, probably due to a fried circuit board, it appears. The bell itself does receive power and the speaker does turn on (as evidenced by the pop sound it makes upon activating), though the bell never starts ringing. The Federal Signal bell on the far signal takes a bit to get started as well, it seems, and while it does ring rather well, it also sounds like it's clicking a lot as it rings and it occasionally misses a beat.
The 2 Tracks signs here are also quite faded, though they (obviously) really aren't needed anymore as there's only one track here. Originally, a spur did split off to a plant just south of the crossing here, but the switch and part of the tracks to it were removed sometime between 2009 and 2013 according to Google Street View (though it does appear that most of the rest of the spur still remains).
They/Them for me, please.
