Can't have signals without railroads, so talk about your favorite locomotives, railroads and any other (non signal) railroad related stuff.

ES recall!

Post by luke »

I heard that every ES locomotive manufactured in 2007 & after has been recalled because of turbocharger defects that could cause them to fly apart!

Turbos spin at incredibly high speeds - over 100,000 rpm in some applications. When one comes apart it is very loud, very fast, and the fragments of impeller shrapnel are usually inhaled by the engine, ruining it.

It's a great idea to NOT let a turbocharger go blooey.

This recall includes the ES44ACs owned by IAIS, all 25 of Norfolk Southern's ES44ACs, and all of BNSF's ES44C4s.

A lot of stored locomotives are going to be pulled back into service due to this!

CSX's AC6000's are back in service. BNSF's SD75I/M's & Cascade Green SD60M's have also come back as well

Well thank goodness BNSF 7639 was built in 2005, she's safe for now. But the IAIS ones? And I was just starting to get very used to them, weird.

UPDATE:

The borderline date between safe units & recalled units is 1/1/2007.

Every unit made after that date is affected by the recall.

This might hurt GE. All EMD has to do is come out with a new well designed locomotive and this could put them back on top.

Oo-er. I don't think I would want to be on a train that suddenly falls to bits!
