Curtis Rd, Atherton, MO

Post by KCMO Railfan »

Recorded on 6-15-20. 2nd catch of the day. After catching the eastbound intermodal at Mabel Ave, Myles and I decided to go film this crossing in action as a westbound was on our tail. Luckily this train came by and was hauling it! This part of the Marceline Sub sees trains going 70MPH through here which is nice to see. As was the case with this westbound intermodal (second one of the day too!. Crossing itself features the typical us&s signals that BNSF used. The grade here used to be a wooden grade according to the only google maps street view of this crossing (dating back to 2007). Not sure when these signals were first installed. I assume this crossing had crossbucks while Mabel Ave had either gateless signals or older gated signals dating back to the atsf days (like the third crossing we would catch in action). Also for some reason, the road changes its name to Atherton Rd after it crosses the tracks. Another oddity is that the relay case here says "Courtney Atherton Rd" instead of Curtis Rd like what the street sign says this road's name is. The sidelights on the right hand signal are for Courtney Atherton Rd as that road intersects this road at a T intersection. After we caught this crossing in action, we would get our final catch (shockingly another westbound intermodal) at Atherton Sibley Rd which is one of two crossings in Atherton, MO to have older atsf signals as there is a gateless crossing tucked away in the woods of a closed off road which me and Myles went to and discovered. Hopefully I'll try to get that crossing in action before BNSF removes those signals as they are rare and old.
Proud owner of 7 mechanical bells along with a pair of safetran 12x20 lights and a 8 inch light. Been a fan of trains since I was little. Main place I railfan on, The Sedalia Sub.

Recorded on 10-22-20. Managed to film this crossing again, this time on the other side. Only change I've seen here since I last filmed this crossing was that the grade was redone when BNSF did track work here. Other than that, no major changes.
