4th Street, Carbon Hill, AL

Post by freebrickproductions »

*originally recorded on 9-20-19*

Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a General Signals Type 2 electronic bell, a US&S Model 95 gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a US&S Model 95 gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.

While I had my main camera set-up at 3rd Street, I decided to run on over here with my secondary camera and set it up to record at the same time. This crossing is rather nice, featuring a pair of old Frisco signals from the 1970s that still retain their original Safetran 12x20 inch lights! However, like with 3rd Street, this crossing has also had its original bell and gate mechs replaced, though both of these happened prior to 2008, according to Google Street View. All in all, I'm just glad both of the crossings in Carbon hill retain some older signals like this. The bell here also rings when the gates rise, like River Road in Cordova.
They/Them for me, please.

Got another video here on 3-21-21:

Appears that the only major change here since 2018 was that the left-hand rear light on the closer signal was replaced with a newer one, but it appears to be another incandescent Safetran 12x20 like the original one was. Will return here tomorrow to get some updated shots though, but I'm glad to see no other major changes here.
They/Them for me, please.

*originally recorded on 3-29-21*

Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a General Signals Type 2 electronic bell, a US&S Model 95 gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a US&S Model 95 gate mechanism, an NEG LED gate light, and RECO LED gate lights.

After catching the phosphate train in Winfield, I chased it on down to this crossing in Carbon Hill. It turns out that the closer signal had both of its left-hand lights on it replaced with re-used Safetran 12x20s (undoubtedly coming from some of the other upgraded crossings along the line), and has also had one of the RECO LED gate lights replaced with an NEG LED gate light. No other major changes appear to have occurred to this crossing yet, nor have I heard of any yet, but apparently the 3rd Street crossing had both of its signals replaced. Glad to see these old Frisco signals are hangin' on though.
They/Them for me, please.

Found no changes here to either this crossing or 3rd Street on 9-14-23. Was also able to film this crossing on the north side this time around.
