*originally recorded on 1-8-20*

Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with Dialight Ball LEDs, a Safetran Type 3 electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with Dialight Ball LEDs, a Safetran gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.

After finishing-up with the S&NA North, I decided to head on over to the southside of Birmingham to document a pair of crossings on the CSX Birmingham Mineral Subdivision. After I documented the second crossing, I had a bit more time left, so I chose to go onto a crossing in the area on the CSX S&NA South Sub. I pulled up to this crossing, and after documenting the crossing, I waited around a bit to see if anything else would come (as I had just missed an Atlanta-bound intermodal that had just come off of the BNSF).
However, just before I was about to pack-up and head back home, I heard a train horn to my south, and I saw the headlights of an approaching train. As such, I stayed around for a bit longer and caught my fifth and final train of the day: a northbound CSX mixed freight with an ES44AH pulling and another ES44AH pushing.

This crossing is, IMHO, quite a nice one. According to the FRA, these signals were installed by CSX in June of 2008, and has remained almost entirely unchanged since. In fact, the only major-ish change here is that the gate arm on the far side was replaced at some point, along with both ENS signs, but the crossing remains unchanged otherwise (which I'm quite glad to see, especially with the gate arm on the near side). The RECO gate lights on this side seem to be a bit messed-up though, as the one on the tip is extremely dim and the middle one doesn't appear to turn off properly. The 2 Tracks signs could also use replacement, as they're quite faded and aren't really as legible as they should be. The Safetran Type 3 here also sounds rather healthy, which is nice to see, as these seem to be getting hard to find on CSX lines these days.
All in all though, this is quite a nice crossing and I'm glad I got to end off with it.
They/Them for me, please.
