Hardeeville Industrial Park Road #2, Hardeeville, SC
*originally recorded on 6-26-21*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of WABCO 8 inch lights, a Federal Signal mechanical bell, a WABCO Model 75 gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 1 pair of WABCO 8 inch lights, 1 pair of Harmon 8 inch lights, a dying WCH mechanical bell, a WABCO Model 75 gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
After catching the two CSX freight trains, we got the third crossing in Ridgeland documented, but as it didn't seem anything else would be coming for a little while, as both of the next trains would be Amtrak, we chose to continue on south to Hardeeville. Here we were able to catch the first of the two Amtrak trains: a northbound Silver Meteor service with a pair of P42DCs for power. Interestingly enough, the trailing P42DC is a 50th Anniversary unit!
This crossing is another nice one, being yet another mid-70s SCL install that's mostly original. At some point, the closer signal had the pair of WABCO 8 inch lights closer to the road struck and replaced with some Harmon 8 inch lights (which might've been re-used?), followed by the original FS bell on it being replaced with the current WCH mechanical bell sometime in the 80s or 90s. Thankfully though, since then, no major changes have occured to these signals, which is quite nice to see. This spot also seems to be a nice quiet location, despite being in the middle of a town, due to it being immediately surrounded by a decent amount of swampland. It's also nice to see the far signal's still almost entirely original, complete with having another nice-sounding FS mechanical bell. Hopefully this crossing remains unchanged for many more years to come as well, but either way, I'm glad to have been able to film it in action. Hopefully CSX does fix the WCH mechanical bell here though.
They/Them for me, please.
