White Sulphur Road #3, near Gainesville, GA
*originally recorded on 12-14-21*
Signal on the left: 1 pair of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with GE Dotted LEDs, 1 pair of Safetran 12x20 inch lights with GE Dotted LEDs, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with GE Dotted LEDs, a Safetran mechanical bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
After the NS local freight met NS 238, 238 got a clear signal to continue on up towards South Carolina, so I went on up to this crossing to get it, as I'd already recorded the other two crossings along this road, so I felt light I probably should get the third. After just a few minutes of waiting, we get to see NS 238 come through this crossing with a pair of AC44C6Ms leading an ES44AC. After this, I tried to get a crossing near downtown Gainesville with a WRRS mechanical bell, but sadly, I just missed another local freight there and nothing else seemed to come through afterwards before the sun set.
This crossing is another pretty nice one. Like with the other two, it appears that this crossing was an early 70s Safetran install from the Southern Railway. In the 2000s though, the far signal was replaced with the current one, and then, in about 2016, this crossing was also given an LED upgrade with most of the other crossings along this line. Since then, no major changes have occurred here, which is rather nice to see.
What's especially nice to see is the closer signal, which remains almost entirely original. The gate mechanism is still the original early-70s Safetran gate mech (though the gate mast was remounted onto a new Safetran base at some point), the lights on it are still the original Safetran 12x24s (though now with LEDs in them), and the bell is still the original 1st Gen Safetran mechanical bell. All in all, this is another pretty nice crossing and I'm glad I was able to record it. Also kinda neat that all three of the crossings along this road appear to have been installed around the same time.
They/Them for me, please.
