NS crossing:
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights, 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a General Signals Type 3 electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG gate lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights.
CSX crossing:
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of WCH 12x24 inch lights with Leotek EV Series LEDs.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of WCH 12x24 inch lights with Leotek EV Series LEDs, 2 pairs of WCH 12x24 inch lights with WCH 2nd Generation LEDs, a WCH mechanical bell, a GRS/WRRS gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
After catching the northbound intermodal train here, I hung around and waited for another train here, as I wanted to get a proper video of this crossing. After close to half an hour of waiting, while participating in my friend @Wootmaster 's Twitter space that was going on at the time (due to the fact Twitter was massively broken thanks to Elon Musk's incompetence), this short northbound NS mixed freight came through with an ET44AC leading a Dash-9 for power.
This crossing is another great crossing, and is the only double crossing in Dalton, GA. It appears that all of the signals here were originally installed by the SOU and L&N back in the early-1970s, though it seems that the SOU replaced their gate mast in the late-70s with the current one. In the 1980s, NS replaced all of their mast lights with the current Safetran 12x24s, while either the SBD or CSX upgraded all of their lights to the current WCH 12x24s (though incandescent originally, of course). Also at about this same time or in the 90s, the original bell on the L&N side got replaced by the current WCH mechanical bell. Next, in the late-90s or 2000s, NS replaced their bell here with a General Signals e-bell, with CSX upgrading their overhead lights to LED in the late-2000s or early-2010s. Then, sometime between 2013 and 2016, NS replaced their General Signals e-bell with a Safetran Type 3 e-bell, though, by the time @EthantheRailfanner visited this crossing in 2019, it'd already gone dead, and was subsequently replaced with the current GS Type 3 e-bell by the time @RaisedLetter visited in 2021. Finally, in early-2022, CSX upgraded the rest of their lights to LED, with thankfully no major changes since.
Despite all of the changes and upgrades to these crossings over the years, this crossing still retains a nice amount of older equipment at it. Both of the original cantilevers are still here, with NS's also still featuring its original overhead lights. CSX's side also still features a working WCH mechanical bell, which is quite nice to see. Amazingly, despite all of the various upgrades to this crossing over the years, CSX's cantilever here also still retains its original GRS/WRRS Type D gate mechanism, which is very nice to see. Hopefully these signals remain unchanged for many more years to come, but, either way, I'm quite glad I got to film this crossing when I did.
