Poplar Springs Road, Waring, GA
*originally recorded on 7-1-23*
Signal on the far left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a Safetran Type 3 electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG gate lights.
Signal on the near left: 1 pair of Safetran 12x20 inch lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
After NS 26C came through, the rain calmed down enough for me to go ahead and set-up my camera and umbrella. After another short wait, I was finally able to record this crossing as this northbound autorack train came through with an NS AC44C6M pulling on the head-end and a UP ET44AH working as the DPU.
This crossing is another nice one, featuring a neat mid-70s SOU install that features an auxiliary gateless signal on this side. It appears that, in the 1980s, the lights here were all upgraded to Safetran 12x24s by NS, but, in the mid-90s, the gateless signal here had the left-hand light struck and replaced with the current Safetran 12x20, while the right-hand light had its background changed to a 20 inch one as well. Then, in either the late-90s or 2000s, NS replaced the bell here with a General Signals e-bell. Finally, sometime between 2007 and 2019, overhauled the far signal, replacing the base with the current reused Safetran one, the lights with the current Safetran 12x20s, and the bell with the current Safetran Type 3 e-bell, though the original mast and gate mech were both kept. Not sure if these happened all at once or if it was piecemeal over a period of time, but, either way, the crossing has thankfully largely remained unchanged since about 2019.
It's definitely nice that both gated signals here have been able to retain their original Safetran gate mechs, though I'm honestly especially glad to see the gateless auxiliary signal in use here, due to the curve in the road just before the crossing. You just don't really see setups like this over here in Alabama, certainly at least not in my area and especially not on the NS trackage around here. Hopefully this neat install remains unchanged for many more years to come, but, either way, I'm quite glad I got to film it when I did.
