Main Street (GA 193), LaFayette, GA
*originally recorded on 9-16-23*
Signal on the left: 3 pairs of WCH 12x24 inch lights with GE Dotted LEDs.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of WCH 12x24 inch lights with GE Dotted LEDs and a WCH Type 2 electronic bell.
This was the eleventh crossing I caught the Summerville Steam Special, and it was probably the oldest pair of signals I'd recorded all day. These signals were originally installed by the Central of Georgia, presumably back in the 50s or 60s (if not before), but, in the 1970s, the Southern Railway replaced all of the lights here with Safetran 8 inch lights. Then, in the 2000s (it appears), the CCKY redid the wiring to the signals (installing the splice boxes seen on the masts), and replaced the bell here with the current WCH e-bell. The crossing then remained relatively unchanged for the about a decade or so, save for the relay case here being replaced between 2007 and 2013. However, in about 2017 or so, I believe, the CCKY upgraded the lights here to LED, replacing the 8 inch lights with the current WCH 12x24 inch lights. Since then, however, this crossing has thankfully remained unchanged.
This crossing, despite how well modernized it is, was one of my higher priority crossings to get on this chase. I believe this crossing has the only surviving pair of CofG-era signals along the CCKY, as the ones in Trion and Summerville have long since been replaced. There is technically one at the very southern end of the line in Lyerly, GA, but that crossing is out of service and the remaining signal there has been stripped bare save for the junction box for the lights.
The closer signal here is also rather far back from the tracks, due to the fact that it appears there were once more tracks here originally. All in all, this is a rather neat little crossing, and I'm glad I was able to get it shot.
