Thompson's Station Road, Thompson's Station, TN

*originally recorded on 7-2-24*

Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with WCH 2nd Generation LEDs.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with WCH 2nd Generation LEDs and a General Signals Type 1 electronic bell.

After I caught L696, I hung around in the area a bit, first trying to wait on M584 at Trousdale Road in Nashville, before heading to Mallory Station Road in Franklin for L696 to come back south. Unfortunately, L696 wound-up sneaking-up on me at Mallory Station Road, so I hit the road and thankfully was able to successfully chase it down to this crossing in Thompson's Station. Here we see CSX L696 heading back south to Spring Hill, with the GP40-2 leading the SD40-3 for power this time.

This crossing is a pretty nice one, and I believe is the last crossing on the Nashville Sub with any L&N equipment at it. The signals here are a pair of gateless mast signals installed by the L&N back in the 1960s or so (it appears), though, in the late-90s, CSX replaced the bell here with the current GS Type 1 e-bell. Then, sometime between 2008 and 2014, this crossing was given an LED upgrade, and the 8 inch lights that were here were sadly replaced with the current LED Safetran 12x24s. Since then, however, thankfully no further changes have occurred to this crossing. I'm especially glad to see another GS Type 1 e-bell stands here, as they're always nice to see. EthantheRailfanner was able to confirm two other GS Type 1s exist on this line on this day, and we suspect there may be a fourth in Franklin. We'll just have to see, I guess.

Signal on the left: 2 pairs of WCH 12x24 inch lights with Leotek EV Series LEDs.

On July 19th, I went back up to the CSX Nashville Sub to see about finally being able to get it finished-out. I was able to get out here before L696 came through, so I had started my camera and left it rolling. A little over 10 minutes later, I heard the rails whistling so I grabbed my DSLR and was able to hop-out of my car just before the crossing activated. Here we get to see CSX L696 heading north through Thompson's Station with the GP40-2 leading the SD50-3 for power.

Within nine or so days of my last video here, CSX replaced the signal on the far side of the crossing with a brand new one, as EthantheRailfanner discovered back on my birthday. I'm not entirely sure why this occurred, but I suspect the old signal must've gotten hit by a vehicle and had to be replaced as a result. Regardless, the closer signal is still the old L&N-era one, and I'm especially glad to see the GS Type 1 here still lives on.
