*originally recorded on 7-22-24*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with WCH 2nd Generation LEDs, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with WCH 2nd Generation LEDs, an NEG electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
On July 22nd, I went back up to the Nashville area to try for L696 on the Nashville Sub once again, as they'd snuck-up on me at this crossing the last time I was here. Thankfully, this time, @EthantheRailfanner was able to give me a heads-up when they got close, and I was able to successfully get my first train of the day: CSX L696 with the SD50-3 leading the GP40-2 for power!
This crossing is a pretty decent one, though, admittedly, it might be the least interesting one on the CSX Nashville Subdivision. This crossing features a pair of gated signals at it, originally installed by CSX in the early-2000s. The crossing remained unchanged for at least a decade, but then, sometime between 2013 and 2014, the signals here were given an LED upgrade with the current LEDs. Then, sometime between 2019 and 2021, it appears the original GS e-bell here (I believe a Type 2) must've died, so CSX replaced it with the current NEG e-bell. Thankfully, since then, no other major changes appear to have occurred to this crossing.
Admittedly, the NEG e-bell here is a bit unusual, as it's mounted on the base of the original GS e-bell here. It seems that when the signal maintainer here came to remove the (presumably dead) GS e-bell, one of the bolts on the base snapped off. The maintainer then attempted to cut through the base to loosen it, but that didn't help get it off either. As such, the maintainer was left with no choice but to remove the original base from the NEG and mount it to the base of the GS e-bell. Definitely a strange one, I suspect this may be the only NEG like this, at least for now.
Regardless, I will admit, I'm definitely glad to have finally been able to record this crossing in action, even if the equipment here ain't exactly interestin'. With this video, I have now recorded all eight of the signalized crossings on the CSX Nashville Subdivision in action! I will admit, even though that number ain't exactly a lot, I never thought that I'd be able to get really any of these shot, due to L696 traditionally running at night. Either way, now videos exist of every one of these crossings in action, and I know Ethan has a few of his own that he'll be uploading at some point as well.
