Wisconsin footage from 2007 with many vintage signals

Post by AndyWS »

In my early days of railfanning, I was concentrating a lot on crossing signals and taking photo sets for this site, and sent a lot of this footage to Mike H. for the DVDs he used to sell through the site as well. If you purchased those way back then or saw it on my previous YouTube channel, this footage will be familiar. However, this is the first time it has been fully edited into one compilation, re-scaled to 16:9 with stabilization, horizon straightening, and some of these angles have not been shared on YouTube before since my dad and I were both shooting at most of the runbys, with my Hi8 and his Mini DV camcorders.

I took all or part of the photo sets for these crossings during this train chase 17 years ago today:

We see gated and ungated Griswold signals, wigwags, and a Safetran hybrid bell. There's also a look at a private wigwag & other signal collection owned by a railfan who lived (and to my knowledge, still does, I last saw him at IRM Diesel Days last year) by the tracks in Lodi. Otherwise, nearly all of this is gone, except the 12x24" signals are still pretty much the same but with LEDs now. The gated Griswold signals on 136 in Rock Springs were damaged by flooding and replaced the following year (other sets of these signals on the line, such as Walnut St. in Baraboo, had 12"x 24" LED lights installed in place of the original Griswold lights around 2019, and may have been replaced entirely by now). The wigwags on Vine St. in Baraboo lasted until March of 2016, I got another video of them just a few weeks before they came down. I'm not sure exactly when, but at some point probably after 2020 the ungated Griswold signals on Blount St. in Madison were replaced with new signals with 12" x 24" LED lights, gates and e-bells. Progress marches on...
