Trinity Road, Cary, NC
*originally recorded on 8-3-24*
Signal on the far left: 3 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with Dialight Ball LEDs, an NEG electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
Signal on the near left: 1.5 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with Dialight Ball LEDs, 1 Harmon 12x24 inch light with a Dialight Ball LED, a General Signals Type 2 electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 3.5 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with Dialight Ball LEDs, 1 Safetran 12x24 inch light with a Leotek EV Series LED, an NEG electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
After catching the Amtrak Silver Star in Apex, I decided to head over to this crossing on the other side of Cary, as I knew the Amtrak Carolinian would be coming eventually. After a little while of waiting, I was able to get my second train of the day here: Amtrak 80 with a P42DC in Phase VII paint for power.
This crossing is a nice crossing, featuring a neat three-quad install at it. Not entirely sure why CSX did only a three-quad install here, rather than a full quad-gate install, but I'm always happy to record another of these in action.
It appears that these signals were installed here in the mid-2000s by CSX, and are still decently original. It appears that, at some point between 2007 and 2011, the front-right light on the exit signal here was replaced by the current Harmon 12x24 inch light, though with the LED being reused. I can't say entirely for certain, but I believe this light may have been reused from the nearby Reedy Creek Road crossing located to the west of here, which was apparently closed back in 2007 per street view. The crossing remained largely unchanged for about a decade after, however, sometime between 2019 and 2021, the bell on the right-hand signal here was replaced with an NEG electronic bell. At about the same time, that same signal had the Dialight Ball LED in the front-right light replaced with the current Leotek EV Series LED. The crossing remained largely unchanged for a couple years after, though, when RaisedLetter recorded this crossing in either late-2022 or early-2023 (Elliot, feel free to specify when it was), only the bell on the exit signal here was working. As such, sometime after 2023, it seems, CSX replaced both bells on the far signal and the right-hand gated signal with the current NEG e-bells, with no major changes to this crossing otherwise. I will say, it's nice to see that the exit signal here still retains an old diagonally-striped gate arm on it as well.
