Iron City Road, Iron City, AL
*originally recorded on 3-14-25*
Signal on the left: 3 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a General Signals Type 3 electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG gate lights.
Signal on the right: 3 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a General Signals Type 2 electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
After catching 29S in Tallapoosa, I hopped on US 78 and continued chasing it west into Alabama. I decided to head for this crossing, which is the lone crossing in the unincorporated community of Iron City, as I'd had my eye on it for a while. After a bit of waiting, I was able to catch NS 29S for the third time on this day.
This crossing is a pretty decent one as well. It appears that this crossing originally had a pair of late-70s or early-80s SOU install, though, in the mid-90s, NS replaced the signals here with the current ones. Then, in the 2000s, NS replaced at least the bell on the closer signal with the current GS Type 2 e-bell. Then, in the latter half of the 2010s, NS replaced the bell on the far signal with the current GS Type 3 e-bell. Since then, no major changes appear to have occurred to this crossing, aside from a more recent LED upgrade to the closer signal's gate lights. As a side note, this was the only crossing I recorded on this day with incandescent gate lights.
