Re: just ugly
I've seen a few of those.
Re: just ugly
CN has a ton of those on their new cantilever setups around Green Bay. I didn't bother shooting more of that one for the website since I'd already gotten so many like it:

They also do that gate-on-attached-pole thing with a different type of cantilever that resembles the 80's Safetran type:

Here's a setup from Michigan: http://www.rxrsignals.net/Michigan/Charlotte/Cochran2/
This cantilever/gate setup is Safetran model WT/F, which if you take out the slash may make the name a bit humorous...
Here's more from Safetran's site: http://www.safetran.com/product/Signal/ ... 0A-2-1.pdf

Yeah, first one like that I saw was years upon years ago on a new Install by Fort Dodge, IA when they finished the new 4-lane US 20 South of town. Traffic picked up on the county road that went up to the former east route in on Old 20... and the road was improved, turn lanes added in areas... and the crossing over the then Illinois Central, now CC/CN. The only difference is that these were installed with the gate mechs to the front instead of the back.

Well,
Re: just ugly
We have one in Springfield on the Union Pacific / Amtrak line at Converse street. Like the one above, the gate attachment is on the front of the signal.
Edit: I found a better picture of it that I took back in 2003.

Re: just ugly
they just mounted the cantilever backwards. They used a left side cantilever instead of a right side, which makes it appear the gate was attached in the front. Dont Forget, Maine has one too on Hallowell Rd. I bet Mike is still angry they forgot to put a crossbuck on the mast.

Re: just ugly
I guess it really doesn't matter whether they put the jet out part either in front or behind... however it would determine where the signal itself is mounted. With the rear facing kind the signal would have to be mounted a bit more forward of the tracks to have room for the gate.
Crossingman... is that crossing above on a hill? Was just wondering why they mounted the crossbuck facing towards us higher up than the rear-facing one.

Re: just ugly
Yeah, the crossign was in a very hilly area and you'd ave to get up close to see the signals, plus Trees in the area didn't help either. These signals are only a few years old. Before these signals came in, the crossing just had 2 8" mast signals with no gates and a mechanical bell. But an accident happened probably because of the poor long range visibility of the crossing, and St Lawrance & Atlantic came and installed what you see today.
