"Old-fashioned" crossing signal in rural PA.

As a young child in the late 1950's driving from Pittsburgh to Lewistown, PA, in rural middle Pennsylvania I recall seeing an "old-fashioned" grade crossing signal on a single track in the middle of nowhere.
I did not like it. -It looked very old and unusual and worn and rusty.
I recall the signal lamps were a smaller diameter and longer - kind of tubular shaped.
The black disks may not have touched the signal lamp housings. -There may have been space bewteen the disk and the lamp housing.
I recall they also had strange two-curve visors -like some present-day 8-1/4 inch traffic signal visors. (I like them on traffic signals.)

Any ideas?
