The Portland City Council agreed to loan the ORHF (Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation) $1 million in order to secure property to build a new home for the three steam locomotives; SP 4449, SP&S 700, and OR&N 197. The Union Pacific has given the ORHF until February, 2012 to vacate the Brooklyn Roundhouse, their current home. After that it will be demolished to expand UP's intermodal facilities.
The ORHF estimates a basic working structure would cost them around $500,000 to build while a full working structure with interpretive center would run around $3.5 million, most of which is raised through donations. So far, the future is looking bright for the 4449, 700, and 197, the latter of which is still under restoration.

Portland's Steam Locomotives Chug Closer to New Home!
You think your car gets bad mileage? SP 4449 consumes 10 gallons of bunker oil and 100 gallons of water every mile.

Sweet. I saw 4449 on its two trips through Wisconsin this past summer. Beautiful locomotive.

It was sweet seeing the 4449 come to Illinois. Check out my videos of it on Utube.
