Grade crossing signals with high white indicator lights

Post by Robert_Gift »

In the 1980s, in St. Petersburgh, Florida, near the famous St. Petersburg pier I found an east-west track.
The south-facing signal at each grade crossing had a metal pole attached to the signal mast extending 5 feet (maybe higher) above.
On top was a clear light bulb in a clear domed cylindrical glass lamp fixture, I recall.

These grade crossing signals could be operated manually. At each crossing was an exposed wood knob protruding from a small electrical box.
With no traffic, when I pulled the knob out, that pair of signals operated. No bells that I recall.
The white light blinked on and off - obviously connected to one of the signal lamp (o) wires.

Were these high lights to indicate that the signals are operating so they are not left operating by accident?

Perhaps it was this track which now ends on the right of the bus in the aerial photo.

The track ends at the bus'es 5:00 o'clock.
You can move along the terrain and view from different directions. See view of east looking west or west looking east.

Originally I thoughthe track went in the grassy center median down the road (2nd Avenue) which goes onto the pier.
But looking further west, I see no way that the track could get there.
I do see the existing track which ends. It likely continued east to the pier in line with it.

Just found this:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 6,,0,-9.18

earlier photo shows other signal on the right which is now gone.
Interesting light in the top of this signal aimed down the track.
The switch and track heading west from the south side are gone.

Actually, if you follow the line that was pulled out and turned into a bike path... check out this inventive use of old crossing signal cantilevers...

Thank you, Krunch.

Sad.
Wonder what the lights do?
YELLOW on for 4 seconds, then two REDs for the walk time?

Earlier I sadly followed that long bike path through a number of communities.

I'm betting they're the "HAWK" signals that are discussed in this thread:

Well, :Censored:

Yay! This is probably the clear white light I saw atop a long metal pole extended above the signal mast.
I do not recall any loop.:

The track has been paved over. Notice gates cut off"

This is where the usable track ends. Notice "derail":
