And in the truck driver's defense... the signals did not start up until he was right on the crossing (he enters the picture immediately after the bell starts ringing). He would have had a hard time stopping and would have run the risk of being rear-ended.

Finally someone designs a gate which gives (hinges) rather than breaking.
