It's not in service any more but it still exists

It's one of the old signals from the Highway 20 crossing west of Willits, CA, along the California Western Railroad, a.k.a. The Skunk Train. When they upgraded the crossing several years ago, the KOA Campground got their hands on one and planted it in at their platform. To the best of my knowledge, the crossing isn't wired to anything... just a static display.

I know we are going off subject a bit... but how do they work? This is a first for me seeing them.

Here's a picture of what they look like up close: Image

Here's more information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattle_grid

In a nutshell it prevents cattle from going onto areas they shouldn't go. Kind of like a fence-less fence.

Wow... I was thinking it was an actual gate that came up to prevent them from passing through. Was starting to wonder if those gates were automated with the crossing signals.

But reading the Wikipedia article, the cattle (or whatever) can't walk across the grid because their feet would go through the holes.

Very interesting!

Ive always been told that cattle dont have very good depth perception so they think it is a bottomless pit rather then a foot trap.
