I don't know about you, but seeing a white light (broken lens) doesn't appeal to me at all.

is it just me or did the bell quit ringing when the gate lowered? i didnt think they had that back then.

Yep, the contact has always been in the mechanisms. It was just up to the railroad to use it or not...
