Buena Vista in Bakersfield

The classic 8" gateless are about to wave bye-bye. I'm not sure about the planned improvment though...a 3 lane crossing??

From todays paper:

Buena Vista Road will be closed at the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, north of Harris Road, starting next Monday until the end of June, city roads officials reported. A development involving Castle & Cooke is spurring the widening of northbound Buena Vista and upgrades to the rail crossing.

Traffic in both directions will make a detour around the closure using Harris, Mountain Vista Drive and Campus Park Drive.

Buena Vista will be closed between Vista Del Christo Drive to the south and Saint John's Lutheran Church to the north to allow for upgrades to road surfaces and crossing devices.

Nick Fidler, an engineer with the city, said the project has been many years in the making because numerous agencies and rail companies were involved.

When the work is done, northbound Buena Vista will have two lanes with room to expand to three when future traffic demands it. Southbound traffic will still have just one lane. Medians will prevent drivers from dodging crossing barriers.

The estimated completion date is June 25.
