Old and dangerous

Post by Andrewsaxamophone »

An active mainline shouldn't use this as a crossing signal for a major road. Granted it's cool and old, still pretty dangerous. When I was in Hammond in January they were replacing the crossings, I wonder if they got to this one yet.

I wonder how active that line is. If Amtrak uses it quite often, then yeah, some upgrades probably should happen.

Obviously those gate masts are rather new. They could upgrade the lights... LED's perhaps? And add some mast lights as well to those old cantilevers.

It's the CSX Chicago line, used at least 45 times a day.

That is quite a bit... I do think that crossing has too few lights though.

all they need is lights on the mast. some of the crossings in Northern AZ have simple setups (mast lights and gates, no cantilevers) and they see up to 120 trains a day.

Interesting!
Its the same number of lights as a typical signal with gate, only better because the lights are more visible than if on the signal mast.
I would not change a thing. Change costs a lot of money.
