I love looking around for old remains like those. Amazing what gets left laying around decades after the fact.

I've seen that crossing in a book. Rails, Rivalry and Romance is the title. I personally don't have a copy of that book, but one of my local libraries had a copy of it, not sure if they still do. Guess I can find out.

Judging by this and this, I'd venture a guess there was a spur or industrial line through here as well.

It's amazing how many smaller midwest town are shown by goole to have rail line, only to find old relics when you look.
