Niles Canyon Railway

Post by cabman701 »

So... just messing around on Google today, I came across this website. Quite an array of interesting signals, and quite a few pictures also. Seems like this crew is pretty big on keeping things maintained.

I also found this railroad on Streetview. Here is a link to one of the crossings with some very classic signals: http://goo.gl/maps/65MMS

That has to be the most original Griswold crossing I've seen to date. I wonder what the rest of the crossings look like.
They/Them for me, please.

Yes, I remember that one from awhile back. Although it appears they installed an extra mast flasher recently on the right.

I really like what they did to the a-gates there. If you notice, they placed reflective strips on it, which afaik was not standard with a-gate installations.

All the signals on the Niles Canyon Railway were installed by the Niles Canyon railway itself, so it's sort of like a rxr signal museum.

Not sure if you saw on the NCR website... but they found that those A frame gates had damage to them, and they ended up putting fiberglass gates on those signals as shown in the below picture.

Don't know how long ago this happened, or whether the wooden gates are back yet. But it appears that they do want them back at some point.

Here is a video of the wags in action. You can skip the first minute or so though. The signals barely stop swinging after the first train goes through, then start up again for a light engine move following close behind.
