Crossing Gates Mailfunction by Tornado
So I was watching the news and a tornado in the Fort Worth area triggered signal mailfunctions, and I thought this was very interesting. Now is it common for this to happen? The Union Pacific maintainer was seen in the live footage fixing the signals during intense hail fall. I will upload some shots later.

I have seen that happen before in person during an intense storm in Illinois. I would think the tracks can attract lightening... maybe a lightening strike could cause it?

I believe a couple of the malfunctions we had here recently were caused by lightning, so it is possible.cabman701 wrote:I have seen that happen before in person during an intense storm in Illinois. I would think the tracks can attract lightening... maybe a lightening strike could cause it?

Do lightning strikes on the track cause a lot of damage to the Crossing equipment?

Well, a lightning strike can make a crossing swap over to batteries only from what I've heard.ToledoRailfan wrote:Do lightning strikes on the track cause a lot of damage to the Crossing equipment?
