Welp, they have fixed the signals at Veterans Drive! However, the signals are now manually controlled, and they just left the signals on the entire time they were switching down here, which is why there isn't a start-up or shut-down of the crossing on camera.
This is also the only crossing in Florence with a WRRS bell, and also the only crossing in Florence with two bells, though one is dead.
Anyways, here's the equipment:
Signal on the left: 3 pairs of Modern Industries 12x20 inch lights and a WRRS mechanical bell.
Signal on the right: 3 pairs of Modern Industries 12x20 inch lights and a dead Modern Industries mechanical bell.
Signal on the left: 3 pairs of Modern Industries 12x24 inch lights with Patco LEDs and a dead Modern Industries mechanical bell.
Signal on the right: 3 pairs of Modern Industries 12x24 inch lights with Patco LEDs and a WRRS mechanical bell.
This crossing has gotten an LED upgrade since I was last here. The LEDs are made by Patco, whom appears to have taken over the production of the LEDs RSI used to make prior to RSI going under. They're also put in at all kinds of angles, with the right-hand one on the mast being upside-down and the left-hand one being cocked at an angle. The keyhole on the relay case was replaced with a plunger in a small Modern Industries box, for activating and deactivating the crossing manually when a train is working the spur track here. The main track (leading towards the Port of Florence) has an automatic detection circuit, though it appears to have issues detecting the train as it does a tail-ring malfunction in both directions.
The cantilevers themselves were likely put up by the L&N in the 1970s, with the light heads being installed in the 1980s by the TSRR. For some unknown reason, neither signal has a 2 Tracks sign despite the fact that there's two tracks here. The MI bell on the far signal is still dead, sadly, and the WRRS bell sounds a bit rougher now, though still works.
I personally like cantilever signals of this style with 3rd Generation MI 12x20 inch lights like this, though they look even better with incandescent lights or LEDs with darker colored lenses, IMHO.
And yes, someone really did blow their horn at the guy in front of them because they were smart enough to stop and wait for the train.
