Broad Street (GA 93), Cairo, GA
*originally recorded on 7-23-19*
Signal on the left: 4 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights, a WCH mechanical bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of US&S 8 inch lights, a WRRS mechanical bell, a WRRS gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
On July 23rd, I went back out to the CSX Dothan Sub to chase A724. Due to track work, A724 didn't get to Cairo until about 5:00, but I was okay with that, since I got to record some nice older crossings anyways. The train also had quite a nice lash-up with a YN3 AC44CW leading a YN3b ES44AH and a YN3 GP38-2. Said GP38 also had a beacon on it that was on for some reason, not sure what that was about.
This crossing was one that was quite a high-priority one for me, so I'm glad that I got it. The far signal was installed in the mid to late 90s by CSX, likely as a knock-down replacement for the original signal that stood there. The closer signal, however, is an original ACL signal. According to the signal maintainer who was here (who was untagging the crossing so it would work once the track work nearby was done), it is from the 1950s. However, I believe that it's older, as, while not visible on the video, the WRRS bell is mounted on the base of an old locomotive-style WRRS bell that the crossing would've originally had. The lights on the closer signal all retain the original vandal-guards, and are also mounted on small extension arms from the mast, likely to keep the original wooden gate from hitting the lights. According to the signal maintainer as well, the WRRS gate mech on this signal (which is apparently from 1956, IIRC) has never given him any trouble at all, despite its age.
The front lights on the far signal are also spread rather far apart, though for visibility reasons, it appears. Both gate arms also have gate stabilizers on them, not something you see too oftenly, I believe.
They/Them for me, please.
