Re: About to get it in N. Texas
Hopefully it won't be like they anticipate....
Re: About to get it in N. Texas
Thankfully it looks like the tornado itself is moving south of us, right now it's crossing from Lewisville into Plano. But we will still likely get the extreme straight-line winds and some torrential rain. The cars have both been put in the garage, and flashlight, blankets and weather radio are in the bathroom under the stairway just in case!
Re: About to get it in N. Texas
We did get hit pretty hard. The sirens went off, and the wind started shaking the house so we took cover in the downstairs bathroom. The power went off, and it's just now come back on after being off for 2 1/4 hours. Luckily no damage at our house.
My parents got hit even harder. They live in Flower Mound, and were eating dinner at a restaurant in Lewisville. But they did not know how bad it was getting. When they left the restaurant, they said there was no rain at all, but the sky was BLACK and the clouds were really low-hanging. They started driving home, and coming down the street towards them was a wall of dust, dirt, paper, and other light debris. After getting hit by that, it started to pour down rain so hard they could barely see to drive. Then the wind was shaking the car so hard they stopped at an Albertson's grocery store to take cover. Then their car almost got nailed by a shopping cart that was zooming through the parking lot at about 40 mph in the wind! And the wind made my dad stumble and skin his knee when they were running into the store. When they got in, the customers and employees that were there had already taken cover in the walk-in freezer so there was no more room. They didn't think it was going to be safe to stay in the store with that type of roof, but by then it was already winding down. So they drove home, and said at least half the trees along the way had large limbs down and the first house coming into their neighborhood had the fence blown down.
Looking at the local news stations, it looks like there was quite a bit of minor-moderate damage all over the north metroplex. Fences, trees, chimneys, light poles, grain silos, semi trucks blown off the road, etc. Here's a photo of the storm as it looked coming into Denton that I found on the channel 8 website:

The photo below was taken at my parent's next-door neighbor's house. A large tree was stripped of its branches. One of the large branches landed on the corner of the roof and caved it in.
It broke some water pipes inside the wall, too.
There was another round of severe storms overnight and this morning, and some parts of Dallas have had over 10" of rain which is causing flooding issues. It looks like there is more of the same in store for us, too. Here is today's HWO:
