Range Street #1, Dothan, AL
*originally recorded on 7-30-19*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights, a dead Safetran mechanical bell, a GRS gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights, 1 pair of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a WCH mechanical bell, a GRS gate mechanism, and Dialight gate lights.
After getting the train at Alice Street, I chased the train on over to this crossing. Turns out the train was stopping to switch a siding here, so I got a bit lucker than I thought I would. However, I was still able to get set-up just in time to record the signals timing out in the first video.
In the second video, we see the BAYL local freight pulling into the crossing and then shoving back into the siding, I assume to pick-up some cars.
And finally, in the third video, we see the BAYL pulling out of the siding and across the crossing and diamond just east of the crossing so they can shove back into the BAYL's Dothan yard.
This crossing is another pretty nice one. Like Alice Street, this crossing also features a pair of SOU gated signals at it, though like Alice Street, it appears that the main lights got upgraded at some point in the late 70s/early 80s, though the one pair of side lights were left alone. Then, in the 2000s (if I had to guess), the original Safetran mechanical bell on the right-hand signal died and was replaced by the current WCH bell. The most recent change, however, was sometime between last year and this year, the gate arm and Dialight gate lights on the far side were replaced, though I didn't quite realize it before I got home. As such, I didn't get any close-up pictures of them, and while I'm not 100% certain who made them, they are almost undoubtedly NEG LED gate lights as that appears to be the current brand that the G&W uses, based on the other modern G&W signals I've seen.
Interestingly enough, the right-hand signal has a pair of currently unused mounts for a sign noting the number of tracks the crossing has. It appears that originally, based on older street view images and how far back the far signal is, this crossing originally had four tracks. However, before the farthest track was removed and the tracks signs were changed to read 3 Tracks. Then, sometime between 2009 and 2013, according to street view imagery, the two closest tracks were also removed, though the 3 Tracks signs were still here in 2013, though they've obviously since been removed.
Also, according to Google Street View, there used to be a pair of driveways coming from the property on the right, so the SOU had installed a pair of side lights facing them. However, between 2009 and 2013, the property got fenced in and both of the driveways were removed, though the G&W has never bothered to remove the side lights on this crossing, even though they're now useless. However, how faded they are, I doubt they see much maintenance anymore. Despite this, surprisingly enough, one of the side lights still retains a working bulb! The crossing also tends to do a tail-ring malfunction once a train enters and leaves the crossing, as seen in two of my videos of this crossing.
They/Them for me, please.
