Sunhill Road, Sandersville, GA
*originally recorded on 6-25-21*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Modern Industries 12x20 inch lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Modern Industries 12x20 inch lights and a WRRS mechanical bell.
On June 25th, Ethan and I got on up and got out to the Sandersville Railroad up in Sandersville, GA, to try and film both the Deepstep Turn and a few of the crossings along their line; primarily their mainline. As we got up there kinda late, the first two trains (the yard job and one that works some industries west of their yard) were already running, so we just went on up here and waited for the Deepstep Turn to get on duty and head to the yard to pick-up their train, since they usually get on duty around 9 AM. Sure enough, at just before 9, I noticed them coming south and got recording and here we see the Deepstep turn on their way to the yard with a pair of SW1500s for power, running lite.
This crossing's a pretty nice one, featuring what's easily both the oldest signals and the only gateless signals along the line. The signals here appear to have been installed back in the 60s by the SAN, and while I don't really know what 8 inch lights they would've had originally, they've obviously long since been replaced by the current MI 12x20s. Thankfully, the original WRRS mechanical bell here still remains and sounds quite nice, so I'm glad to have been able to record them. Also, as you can see, a few of the lights here use LED bulbs inside of them, which we'll be seeing a few more of on two of the other crossings we recorded on this day.
