*originally recorded on 7-31-21*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of WCH 12x24 inch lights with WCH 2nd Generation LEDs, a General Signals Type 2 electronic bell, a WABCO Model 75 gate mechanism, NEG LED gate lights, and a RECO LED gate light.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of WCH 12x24 inch lights with WCH 2nd Generation LEDs, a dying Safetran mechanical bell, a WABCO Model 75 gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
After catching NS 151, I went back over to the CSX Fitzgerald Sub to see if anything else was coming, and sure enough, South End Cordele was lined for an eastbound to come through. As such, I decided to set-up here and, after a while of waiting, CSX N015 came rolling through with an ES44AH leading an ES40DC on the head-end and another ES44AH working as the mid-train DPU.
This crossing's another rather nice one, featuring a nice pair of WABCO signals installed by the SCL back in the 80s. Originally, these likely featured all WABCO equipment, but it seems like the WABCO bell on the closer signal died young and was replaced with the current Safetran mechanical bell. The other WABCO bell here likely survived into the early 2000s, when it too was replaced, this time with the current GS Type 2. Since then, the only major change to this crossing was in about 2014/2015, when CSX upgraded the Fitzgerald Sub, including this crossing, to LED, replacing the original WABCO 8 inch lights here in the process.
Thankfully, the Safetran mechanical bell at this crossing is still here, though it's definitely sounding like it's in need of some TLC. Hopefully CSX fixes it rather than replacing it, but I wouldn't be surprised if they just let it wear itself out and then install an NEG e-bell here. The crossing also tail-ringed almost immediately after the train passed, likely due to how slow it was moving.
All in all, this is a rather nice crossing, so I'm still glad to have been able to record it. As a side note, this is also the easternmost crossing on the CSX Fitzgerald Sub within Cordele's city limits.
They/Them for me, please.
