Commerce Street (US 27/GA 1), Summerville, GA
*originally recorded on 9-16-23*
Signal on the left: 5 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with GE Dotted LEDs, a WCH Type 3 electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 5 pairs of WCH 12x24 inch lights with WCH 2nd Generation LEDs, a General Signals Type 3 electronic bell, a WCH gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
Once the excursion train had pulled into the station at Summerville, I went off and got lunch with DeeDeeTeeArts and his partner. After lunch, I decided to go and set-up at this crossing to wait for the return trip back north to Chattanooga. After a bit of waiting, during which another railfan (whose name I sadly can't remember, feel free to let me know if it was you in the comments below) set-up next to me as well. After a bit of waiting, the Summerville Steam Special departed for Chattanooga, and I began my chase back north here with my ninth crossing of the day.
This crossing is a pretty decent one, though is easily probably the most boring crossing I recorded on this day. The signals here appear to have been installed in the early-80s by the late-SOU/early-NS, and were largely original up through at least 2008. However, at some point between 2008 and 2011, the CCKY replaced the original Safetran mechanical bell here (located on the closer signal) with a pair of WCH e-bells mounted on the gate masts, as shown in a video of this crossing from 2011 that owensri2 recorded. The crossing remained largely unchanged after that for a good few years but then, sometime between 2018 and when EthantheRailfanner got out here in August of 2021, the CCKY upgraded this crossing to LED using GE Dotted LEDs. Finally, sometime between Ethan's visit in 2021 and street view coming through here next in September of 2022, the closer signal was replaced entirely, I suspect due to being wiped-out by a vehicle, with the current TCR cantilever. Since then, however, no major changes appear to have occurred to this crossing.
