Oddball Crossing
I was searching my local area on Google maps and have found something in Arcadia, CA that's just uncanny. First things first, this crossing has a total of four WISHBONE GATES!!! Second, there are FOUR of them. Third, there are NO FLASHERS at this crossing!!!! Not even a crossbuck! To the east, there is what looks like a passenger car parked on a side track. I think I may be nuts, but please, see this for yourself.
**EDIT: This line appears defunct. The rails end just east of the crossing and the passenger car looks quite ancient. Still fun to look at!

Re: Oddball Crossing
For a defunct line, it doesn't look that bad. That is a bit unusual.
Re: Oddball Crossing
Interesting too... if you follow the the ROW past where the tracks end, it's in the middle of the freeway... and eventually turns into commuter rail. I wonder if the line isn't in the process of being brought back to life perhaps.
Wonder who's idea it was to remove the signals and leave the gates though...very odd.
Edit:
If you come around to this point, you can see that the crossing is not accessable, as rail has been removed by the cars...

Well,
Re: Oddball Crossing
That certainly is odd that they would remove only the signal masts and leave the gates.
It also looks like to me those gates are not long enough. They would leave a pretty huge gap in the middle of the crossing if they were down. Wonder if at one time they were longer?

Re: Oddball Crossing
I've seen that crossing active 20 years ago.
When SP sold the line to Metrolink, the overpass across the 210 freeway was removed for some reason. I believe that UP owns/shares the ROW with Metrolink on the east side of the removed overpass. There are still industries in Monrovia, Irwindale, Azusa, and others that recieve service from that line.
The line is suposed to be converted to Metrolink in the future, but that would mean cutting off the industries still usng the freight service - including a huge Miller brewing plant. That Metrolink line is stupidly incompatable with ordinary rail line - it is electic through overhead lines too low for regular trains to operate.
On edit: That's sure a nice set of passenger varnish being stored there!

Re: Oddball Crossing
Yeah. I didn't see the old foundations for the flashers before. I may be mistaken, but the Goldline project will be coming around in the next decade or so and this line may be used for the proposed light rail system, bu I have to check into that.

the tracks have been removed if you go west to the freeway.

Rest In Peace Guilford SD26 615!

Re: Oddball Crossing
Don't let me near there!
I'd get a jumper cable and short the rails and see if the gates operate.
Fascinating.
Do those gates have red lights on them?
Someone out there please try to find out what happened to the (o)-(o)s.
gedunk, did you see the gates operating?
Are there bells.
Were there lights?
Danke gedunk.

Yes to all of the above. I was riding the Amtrak Desert Wind on two of the several occasions I saw the crossing active. Since the line is now cut just west of this crossing, the lights were probably removed as spare parts. When I don't know.Robert_Gift wrote:Don't let me near there!

You must test the gates when there is no traffic.
Even though there never can be a train there again, I bet they are still active!
Thank you.
