GA 90 #1, Mauk, GA

Post by freebrickproductions »

*originally recorded on 6-27-25*

Signal on the left: 2 pairs of WCH 12x24 inch lights with WCH 2nd Generation LEDs, a dead Safetran mechanical bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of WCH 12x24 inch lights with WCH 2nd Generation LEDs, an NEG electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.

After catching M605 at GA 90 #2/GA 127, we hopped over to the other crossing in Mauk to see what else we could get. After about an hour and a half of waiting, we were able to catch our third train of the day: CSX M515 with an AC44CW leading an ES44AH for power.
I must say, this crossing provides an excellent angle for southbound trains like this. Due to how sharp the tracks cross the road here due to being at one end of a curve, you can watch southbound trains approaching from a very long distance off, as shown in this video. While the train is approaching, you can also hear a defect detector a few miles to my north reading-out for it.

This crossing is another nice one, featuring another decently-original late-70s SCL install at it still too. It appears that this crossing remained largely unchanged for several decades, up until the early-2010s (most likely between 2012 and 2014), when CSX upgraded this crossing to LED, sadly replacing the original Safetran 8 inch lights here in the process with the current WCH 12x24s. Then, sometime between 2014 and 2022 (my guess is most likely between 2020 and 2022), CSX replaced the original Safetran mechanical bell on the closer signal here with the current NEG e-bell. Thankfully, since then, nothing else appears to have changed to this crossing, which is nice to see. The far signal even still has its original Safetran mechanical bell, but, sadly, it sounds like it's dead. Hopefully CSX fixes it at some point, but I wouldn't be too surprised if that becomes another NEG e-bell at some point too.
Interestingly, it seems a railfan in this area made themselves some reproduction SCL property stickers, and stuck one on the closer signal's counterweight arm.
