*originally recorded on 11-25-25*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Federal Signal 8 inch lights and a Safetran Type 2 electronic bell.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of WRRS 8 inch lights.
After catching M574 at Rich Pond Road, I continued on up to Smiths Grove, sadly just missing an M575 in the process. Thankfully, after a little while of waiting, I was eventually able to get CSX M574 again here, for the third and final time on this day. I will admit, it was definitely kinda neat that M574 had all three flavors of CSX GEVO on it on this day.
This crossing is another great one, featuring a classic pair of gateless 8 inch signals at it still. It appears that the signals here were originally installed by the L&N, though I'm not sure if one would've predated the other or not, considering that the closer signal has WRRS 8 inch lights and the far one has Federal Signal 8 inch lights. Either way, it appears that in the 1990s (or possibly the 2000s), CSX decided to replace the masts here with the current ones, though, thankfully, they chose to reuse at least the lights onto the newer masts. Then, or at about the same time, in the mid-2000s, CSX replaced the bell here with the current Safetran Type 2 e-bell. Thankfully, since then, nothing else appears to have changed to this crossing, which is great to see. Nice to get another classic 8 inch gateless install recorded, especially one that still survives on a Class I mainline like this. Admittedly the newer masts here kinda make it look like a gateless SCL install, though I don't mind that, especially since with this video, I have now recorded every surviving gateless 8 inch crossing on the Mainline Sub! Hopefully these classic signals remain unchanged for many more years to come, but, either way, I'm definitely glad I was finally able to get these classics recorded as well.
